EU scales back 2035 ban, permits combustion engine cars

17/12/2025 7:47
The European Commission unveiled a package of auto sector measures on Tuesday, including the scrapping of its effective ban on sales of new combustion

engine cars from 2035.

Under current EU rules, all new cars and vans from 2035 must have zero emissions. But under Tuesday's proposal, CO2 emissions must be reduced by 90% from 2021 levels, instead of 100%.

Automakers will have to make up the gap by producing with lower carbon steel made in the European Union and via use of synthetic e-fuels and non-food biofuels, such as agricultural waste or used cooking oil.
