Jordan, Palestinian officials urge sustained Gaza ceasefire

Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi met here on Tuesday with Palestinian Vice President Hussein Al Sheikh, during which they urged consolidating the Gaza ceasefire and addressing the escalation in the West Bank.



Both sides stressed that achieving an immediate and sustained ceasefire in Gaza is a top priority, and called for full implementation of the ceasefire deal and progress toward its second phase, read a Jordanian Foreign Ministry statement.



They underscored that Gaza's future must be based on its unity with the West Bank, with the Palestinian Authority assuming responsibility for the enclave, in line with UN resolutions and the two-state solution, it added.



The two sides urged sufficient and immediate humanitarian aid access to Gaza, and called on Israel to lift all restrictions on aid delivery, the statement noted.



Both sides also discussed the deteriorating situation in the occupied West Bank, warning against Israeli measures that could further escalate tensions, read the statement, adding that the two officials stressed the need to respect the status quo at holy sites in Jerusalem.
