HKSAR government decries smearing attacks on Jimmy Lai sentencing
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government on Monday strongly denounced and firmly opposed smearing attacks against the sentences handed down on Jimmy Lai and other defendants in a national security case.
Addressing slanders made by certain Western countries as well as anti-China media outlets, organizations and politicians, the spokesperson underscored that the court's Reasons for Verdict had clearly stated that Lai was not on trial for his political views or beliefs. The verdict is grounded in evidence and laws and the sentences are just, said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson refuted claims that the sentencing could affect press freedom in the HKSAR, stressing that the defendants have long been using news reporting as a pretext for endangering national security and destabilizing Hong Kong.
