Somalia calls for respect for sovereignty amid Israel-Somaliland ties

Somalia on Tuesday called on the global community to uphold international law, respect its sovereignty, and condemn actions undermining the nation's unity and stability.

In a statement issued in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Community expressed concern over recent bilateral engagements between Israel and Somaliland, saying that such actions had occurred outside the authorized framework of the Somali federal government.

"Somalia considers any such engagement a violation of its sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and constitutional order," the ministry said.

Tensions between Somalia and Israel escalated after Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, officially inaugurated a new embassy in Jerusalem on Monday, following Israel's decision to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state.

"Somalia remains a sovereign and internationally recognized state, and the government is the sole legitimate authority empowered to represent the country in international relations," the ministry said.
