2 children dead, 5 injured after vehicle rollover west of Melbourne, Australia

Two children have died and five more have been hospitalized after a vehicle they were traveling in rolled over west of Melbourne on Tuesday.

Police said in a statement that a woman and seven children were inside the eight-seater vehicle when the accident happened about 47 km west of central Melbourne shortly before 4:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

Detective Sergeant Tony Gentile said that the woman had picked the children up from school prior to the incident.

A seven-year-old girl died at the scene, and an 11-year-old boy who was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries died overnight.

The other five children were all hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and the 34-year-old driver was taken to hospital for observation.

Police asked for witnesses or anyone with footage of the rollover to contact investigators.
