Road accident kills at least 33 in southeastern DRC

At least 33 people were killed and around 20 others injured in a road accident in southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), local media reported Wednesday.

Citing Georges Babunyi Mbau, transport minister of Haut-Katanga province, the reports said the victims were aboard a truck traveling from the neighboring Haut-Lomami province when it plunged into a river in Mukana, Mitwaba territory between late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

The death toll remains provisional, according to the official, who added that some road accidents were linked to drivers' behavior, but did not specify the cause of this accident.

The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation.
