HKSAR gov't condemns smearing attacks using Jimmy Lai case

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government on Thursday firmly rejected smearing remarks made by politicians of the United States' Congressional-Executive Commission on China in a so-called "hearing" regarding Jimmy Lai's case of committing offences endangering national security.



Anyone who vilifies the rule of law and the human rights situation in the HKSAR by exploiting the Jimmy Lai case is distorting the facts, said a spokesperson for the HKSAR government. Their malicious intent is glaringly apparent and must be refuted to set the record straight.



The anti-China politicians have clamored at the so-called "hearing" to intimidate relevant officials safeguarding national security with so-called "sanctions." They have grossly interfered in Hong Kong affairs, which are China's internal affairs, and have seriously violated international law and the basic norms governing international relations, said the spokesperson.



None of the relevant HKSAR government officials are intimidated, noted the spokesperson, adding that they will continue to resolutely discharge their duty of safeguarding national security.
