Turkiye detains 34 in capital market probe
Turkish authorities on Wednesday detained 34 more suspects in a fresh wave of operations targeting alleged capital market manipulation, expanding a sweeping investigation that now implicates 217 individuals.
In a post on social media platform X, Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said the latest operations marked the fifth wave of an ongoing probe into fraudulent fund schemes.
Out of the 217 individuals processed so far, 56 have been arrested and 88 placed under judicial control, Gurlek said.
He added that the investigation extends beyond current funds and suspects, with authorities closely scrutinizing manipulative trading across 26 different stocks.
The criminal probe expanded following a sharp sell-off on Borsa Istanbul in mid-September. The benchmark BIST 100 index plunged more than 7.5 percent at one point. Turkiye's Capital Markets Board reported 455,758 investors were registered in the implicated funds.
