Joshua Wong sentenced to 10 years in jail on national security charge

Joshua Wong, an instigator of anti-China riots in Hong Kong, was sentenced to ten years in jail on Thursday for "conspiracy to collude with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security."

The sentence was delivered by the High Court of Hong Kong.

Wong, former secretary-general of the now-disbanded anti-China group "Demosisto," was charged with conspiring with Nathan Law Kwun-chung and other persons to request a foreign country or an institution, organization or individual outside the Chinese mainland and China's Hong Kong and Macao to impose sanctions or blockade, or to engage in other hostile activities against the HKSAR or the People's Republic of China, during the period from July 1 to Nov. 23, 2020.

Wong was arrested for the case in Stanley Prison in June 2025 when he was serving a 56-month sentence after being convicted of conspiracy to subvert state power in November 2024. He pleaded guilty in September this year.
