S, Cuba trade barbs at UN ahead of sanctions vote
The United States and Cuba traded accusations at the United Nations after US diplomats hosted an event featuring Cuban dissidents ahead of next week's annual UN vote on a resolution calling for an end to a US embargo on the island.
Cuban ambassador to the UN, Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, and other representatives yelled at the US ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, as he left the event at the UN building, which focused on allegations of human rights abuses by the Cuban government.
The tensions between the two nations are rising before the vote on the non-binding resolution, which has passed in the UN General Assembly by wide margins every year since 1992, and amid mounting strain from a US-imposed oil blockade on Cuba.
The vote is expected to take place on Oct. 27-28, officials said.
