Turkiye detains 223 in nationwide raids over alleged coup links
Turkish police have detained 223 suspects over the past 20 days in nationwide operations over their alleged links to a coup attempt in 2016, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Tuesday.
In a statement on the social media platform X, Yerlikaya said the operations targeted individuals allegedly engaged in the Gulen movement's covert structures, including encrypted communications and financial support activities.
Eighty-seven suspects have been arrested and 50 placed under judicial supervision, while legal procedures are ongoing for the remainder, he added.
The Turkish government accuses the Gulen movement, led by the Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen, who lived in the United States from 1999 until his death in 2024, of orchestrating the 2016 coup attempt that left more than 250 people dead and thousands injured. Authorities say operations to dismantle its network are continuing.
