HKO predicts warmer 2026 with a near-normal typhoon season

The Hong Kong Observatory forecasts a typhoon season starting in June or later with 4-7 tropical cyclones near the territory, while 2026 is likely to rank among the 10 warmest years on record due to El Nino and climate warming.



The Observatory expects 4 to 7 tropical cyclones to enter within 500 km of Hong Kong this year, close to the long-term average.



The season may begin in June or afterwards and conclude by October or earlier.



Annual rainfall should remain near normal, though heavy rain and localized downpours are still possible, so residents should prepare for stormy weather.



A potential El Niño developing in the second half of the year, combined with ongoing global warming, is expected to push the annual average temperature above normal, with a high chance of entering the top 10 hottest years since records began.
