At least 13 people were killed and 23 others injured on Thursday in a traffic accident in the Red Sea State, eastern Sudan, according to a statement by the Sudanese Police press office.
The accident occurred when a travel bus operated by a transport company en route from Port Sudan to Kassala collided with a cargo truck. Excessive speed, improper overtaking, and driver negligence were listed as the cause of the crash, the statement said.
Traffic accidents in Sudan are commonly attributed to reckless driving, deteriorating road infrastructure, and the outdated condition of many vehicles.
The situation has been further exacerbated by ongoing armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have disrupted major roads linking various states.
Additionally, last year's heavy rainfall caused significant damage to key routes, forcing drivers to rely on alternative roads.
