A civilian was killed Friday in an Israeli drone strike near a house in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese sources.
The Public Health Emergency Operations Center, affiliated with the Ministry of Public Health, said in a statement that the strike targeted the village of Aita al-Shaab, Bint Jbeil district.
A Lebanese army intelligence source told Xinhua that the dead was identified as Mohammad Hussein Qassem, 65.
Meanwhile, Lebanon's official National News Agency reported Israeli artillery at a prefabricated house in the village of Maroun al-Ras, Israeli heavy machine gun fire at the outskirts of the town of Shebaa and village of Kfarchouba, as well as a stun grenade dropped by an Israeli drone between Maroun al-Ras and the village of Yaroun.
Since Nov. 27, 2024, a U.S.- and French-brokered ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel has formally been in effect, ending more than a year of cross-border clashes. The agreement stipulated Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon, but the Israeli army has maintained several posts along the border and continues to launch attacks, citing "threats" from Hezbollah.
On Monday, the Israeli army reportedly established a new military post in the border region of southern Lebanon.
