A Chinese envoy on Friday warned against abusing sanctions against Sudan after the Security Council adopted a resolution to renew the sanction regime for a year.
In an explanation of the vote after the adoption of the resolution, Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said sanctions are a means rather than an end and should not be abused as a political tool for interference and pressure.
"The priority now is to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible, mitigate the humanitarian plight and steadily advance the political process," said Sun.
He called on the international community to earnestly safeguard Sudan's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and support the mediation efforts led by the United Nations and the African Union to help Sudan restore peace and stability at an early date.
Noting that China voted in favor of the draft resolution, Sun said that the ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to mounting civilian casualties and an increasingly dire humanitarian crisis.
