Chinese premier extends condolences over massive Portugal forest fire disaster

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has extended condolences over the devastating forest fires in Portugal, which have claimed more than 40 lives since Sunday. In a message sent to Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa on Tuesday, Li, on behalf of the Chinese government and in his own name, mourned the dead, extended sincere sympathy to the injured and the bereaved families, and wished the injured a quick recovery. The Chinese premier believes that under the leadership of Costa, people in the disaster-hit areas will overcome the current difficulties and rebuild their homeland. Some 500 wild fires flared up across the north and center of Portugal on Sunday, with 42 people confirmed dead.
