Cyclist killed in crash with train in southern Brisbane, Australia

2/6/2025 12:31
A cyclist has died after being hit by a train in the southern suburbs of Brisbane, Australia, in the early hours of Monday morning.

A police statement said that emergency services were called to reports of a collision at a level crossing in Runcorn, 15 km south of central Brisbane, around 4:30 a.m. on Monday.

The cyclist, a 69-year-old local man, was found with head injuries and died at the scene.

A spokesperson for the railway operator in the state of Queensland told Nine Entertainment newspapers that boom gates were down at the level crossing and lights were flashing to warn of an approaching train at the time of the collision.

Road closures and diversions were put in place and commuters were told to expect train delays of up to 60 minutes following the incident. Train services returned to normal by 9:30 a.m.

The Queensland Police Service said that the forensic crash unit has commenced an investigation into the incident.
