Turkiye summons Iran's ambassador over missile fired toward its territory
Turkiye's Foreign Ministry summoned Iran's ambassador on Monday over the issue of a ballistic missile fired from Iran toward Turkiye, the state-run TRT broadcaster reported.
"Iran's ambassador to Ankara was summoned to the Foreign Ministry and asked to provide an explanation regarding the ballistic missile fired from Iran toward Turkiye," the TRT quoted anonymous Turkish Foreign Ministry sources as saying.
Turkiye's Defense Ministry said earlier Monday that a missile launched from Iran was intercepted over Turkiye's southeastern province of Gaziantep.
The ministry said in a statement that the ballistic munition, which entered Turkish airspace, was neutralized by NATO and missile defence assets deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Some debris from the missile fell on vacant land in Gaziantep, without causing casualties.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Monday that continued "provocative steps" by Iran could strain Turkiye's friendship with its neighbor, after the missile was intercepted, marking second such incident since the regional escalation.
