Minions; Monsters; tops North American box office in opening weekend

Universal Pictures and Illumination's animated comedy film "Minions & Monsters" took the top spot at the North American box office in its opening weekend with an estimated three-day cummulative of 36.4 million U.S. dollars, data from measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.



"Minions & Monsters," the seventh installment in the "Despicable Me" franchise, has grossed 61.4 million dollars in the United States and Canada for the five-day Fourth of July holiday weekend since its July 1 release.



It also took in 85 million dollars internationally this weekend for a global cummulative of 159.9 million dollars.



After leading the box office for two consecutive weeks, Disney and Pixar's animated film "Toy Story 5" dropped to second place this weekend. The animated sequel film earned 31 million dollars in its third weekend for a North American total of 366.3 million dollars through Sunday.



Rounding out the top three, Angel Studios' historical drama "Young Washington" opened this weekend to a debut of 20.8 million dollars.
