UK nationals charged after 107 kg of ketamine seized by Sydney police

A man and woman from the United Kingdom have been charged after Sydney police located and seized over 100 kg of ketamine in a rented car.



In a statement issued on Monday, the police force in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said that 2 kg of ketamine was initially seized at a northern Sydney unit on Sunday by officers investigating alleged drug supply in the area.



Three days later, police searched a northern Sydney hotel room and arrested a 30-year-old man and 23-year-old woman, both UK nationals.



Approximately 105 kg of ketamine was found during a subsequent search of a car allegedly rented by the 30-year-old man.



Several mobile phones, 1,400 U.S. dollars in cash and documents were seized from the hotel room.



The UK nationals were taken to a police station and charged with supplying prohibited drugs in larger than or equal to large commercial quantities, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, and with the lesser offense of supplying drugs in larger than indictable quantities.



Police said it will be alleged in court that the man and woman had traveled to Australia for the sole purpose of taking part in the distribution and supply of commercial quantities of prohibited drugs.
