At least nine people were killed and 32 others injured after a pile of recovered explosives exploded at a police station in the Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Saturday.
The massive explosion took place late Friday at Nowgam police station in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
According to the region's Police Chief Nalin Prabhat, nine people have died in the accident, with 32 others injured, adding that the nature of the blast was accidental and took place while handling the confiscated explosives for taking samples for forensic examination.
According to police, the explosives kept at the police station premises were recently recovered from Faridabad (Haryana), ferried to the region and kept at the police station as part of the investigation into a recent car bomb explosion in Delhi.
The explosion, which was heard in the entire Srinagar, has severely damaged the police station and the adjacent buildings. Police have ordered an inquiry into the explosion.
"The cause of this unfortunate incident is being inquired into," Prabhat further said.
Following the explosion, a fire engulfed the building and several vehicles parked inside its premises. Eyewitnesses and video footage from the area show the blast ripping through the building, sending flames and thick smoke into the air.
