A man who strangled his emotionally ill daughter to death three years ago was unanimously found guilty of manslaughter and acquitted of murder by a seven-member jury. He was sentenced to 4 years and 8 months in prison today at the High Court.
The incident occurred in 2022. The 70-year-old defendant, Chen Guisheng, was attacked with an umbrella and berated by his 32-year-old daughter for over an hour. Provoked, he strangled her. In sentencing, Judge Wu Yawen described the case as tragic and said there was room for "extrajudicial leniency." She used a starting point of 7 years in prison, but deducted one-third of the sentence for the defendant's admission of manslaughter at trial, bringing the final sentence to 4 years and 8 months. The judge noted that the defendant had already served 3 years and 5 months in custody and expected to be released soon.
