3/7/2025 6:12
The Food Safety Centre, through its routine food monitoring program, took a silver cod fish sample from a merchant in North Kwai Chung Market for testing and found that the metallic impurity methylmercury exceeded the legal standard. The result showed that the methylmercury content was 1.1 mg per kilogram, exceeding the legal standard of 0.5 mg per kilogram; the merchant involved was informed and ordered to stop selling the affected product.

The Food Safety Centre is tracing the source and distribution of the product and will continue to follow up. If there is sufficient evidence, prosecution will be initiated.

The Food Safety Centre pointed out that consuming large amounts of mercury will affect the brain development of the fetus and damage the vision, hearing, muscle coordination and memory of adults.
