At least six people were killed and 27 others injured when a passenger bus fell into a gorge on a motorway in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province around midnight Sunday, police said on Monday.
The accident occurred when the bus, with 41 passengers on board, overturned and plunged into a gorge, Saqib Waheed, a spokesperson of the Motorway Police, told Xinhua.
Five people, including four women, died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries at a hospital.
"The injured had been transferred to various hospitals where seven of them are in critical condition," he added.
Waheed said the investigations indicated that the accident occurred due to the driver's negligence amid slippery road conditions caused by rain.
Road accidents in Pakistan have become an alarming issue, with a significant increase in both frequency and severity over the years.
Reckless driving, poor road conditions, and inadequate vehicle maintenance are among the primary causes of the high accident rate.
