At least six Hindu pilgrims were killed and five others went missing after an overloaded vehicle carrying them fell into a canal in the northern Indian state of Punjab, police said Monday.
The vehicle skidded off the Jagera bridge and fell into the Sirhind canal on Sunday night in Ludhiana district, about 100 km west of Chandigarh, the capital city of Punjab.
While most of the pilgrims were saved and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of injuries, the search for the missing is underway.
Reports said the driver of the ill-fated vehicle lost control while overtaking another vehicle on the bridge.
