UN Security Council condemns violence against civilians in Syria's Sweida

11/8/2025 11:44
The United Nations Security Council on Sunday strongly condemned violence against civilians in Sweida, a predominantly Druze province in southern Syria.

In a presidential statement, the Security Council expressed deep concerns over the recent escalation of violence in the Sweida governorate since July 12, including mass killings and the internal displacement of people. It urged all parties to adhere to the ceasefire arrangement and protect civilians regardless of their ethnicity or religion.

Welcoming the investigations launched by Syria's interim authorities, the council said they should be credible, swift, transparent, impartial and comprehensive in line with international standards, ensuring accountability and bringing all perpetrators of violence to justice.

Meanwhile, it highlighted a strong objection to all forms of negative or destructive interference in Syria's political, security and economic transition.

An inclusive, Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process should be implemented in the Middle Eastern country, according to the council.
